Let's say I were to delete this instance tomorrow, or maybe the domain expires and I never renew it... Does the cache of my posts and info and such eventually disappear from other fediverse instances? Do posts have a TTL that gets refreshed with the originating server or anything like that? I am sure that it is different across different implementations, so I'm really just looking for a general answer...

@cody@subnet-masked.com it differs depending on implementation.
I believe both Mastodon and Lemmy will keep a copy of your posts forever unless explicitly deleted.
NodeBB (where I am) will only keep posts if there is a relation to someone local (e.g. a follow, participation in a local topic, etc.), otherwise it gets deleted within 7days (by default)

Depending on the project, you'll have different options. On Friendica, where I'm located, the admin has extensive control over this. If a post expires locally, it's retrieved again from the original server. If the server is no longer available at that time, the post content is no longer accessible.

@dusoft I am not aware of that being an option in GoToSocial, but even if it was, I think my question is assuming that it is not on.

@cody The items that are presently federated on to other instances will be removed in time based on that instances policies, data retention problems, or whether the instance goes away or not.
If you want your items to survive at all for some reason, you'd want to either export your data from your account or hang on to the instance's database (and, potentially stored files that go along with your posts).

On lemmy.world, during a few months, I made a few posts into a community that was created for my hometown Bern, without noticing that it was only a zombie copy on my instance; the original community's instance had been shut down long before.I found this a bit dissatisfying and asked in the instance's help forum, but the answer was not really satisfying either:
