Are you asking in your poll how people *want* it to work, or how they *think* it works?

If I look through the docs, and given how little is documented about indexable flag, I think / my interpretation is you basically give consent to "all" if the flag is true.

Another interesting observation is that other fedi devs use(d) their own interpretation of what indexable means to model consent for features they were creating in their apps.

@smallcircles you want double opt-in? You opt in once through your instance UI or whatever, and then you opt in through the search engine's UI, too?

Why have the double opt-in?

Why isn't opting in through the search engine's UI enough?

@smallcircles And are you counting other Fediverse instances in this? You have to go to each and every other instance -- all 40,000+, mstdn.jp, social.tchncs.de, cosocial.ca -- log in, and proactively enable search results with your remote content from social.coop?

@evan when people create a new account they should be asked directly with a modal if they want their content to be indexed. Most people do not deep dive in settings

@evan those are good questions. Relating to more things that are unclear both in the poll as well as in how the feature works.

I always read this feature as "do you mind that we do stuff with your public content, or do you rather have we don't".

@brooke One way is that you could go to ExampleSearchEngine web site, log in with your Mastodon account, and then click a button that says "take me out of your search index". Google has some tools for this for Web search:
