How about a server that just works and doesn't hog all the compute? So many frilly interfaces that require gigabytes of storage for just one or three user accounts. Yikes!

A server doing what? I made the post because when saying "server" or "instance" in a fediverse context, people imply that this deals with Microblogging. Fediverse has become microblogging galore, one large Twitter++.
ActivityPub is so much more powerful and versatile than that, and just recreating existing (corporate) social media platforms yet slightly more decentralized, is a lack of the imagination. I wrote various blog posts about this subject. The last one introduces the Prosocial web, and a paradigm shift for the fediverse that is within reach:

@manlycoffee I don't use AI to write code. But I accept AI assisted contributions - because they are indistinguishable from organic ones.
