Mastodon 4.6 is rolling out, and it's a big one. We've already upgraded toot.community, so everything in this thread is live for you right now. Here's what's new for the whole fediverse. 🧵

First up: Collections. Group up to 25 accounts into a list and share it with anyone. Good for pointing people at the folks you follow on a given topic. It works across the fediverse too, not just here.

Your profile got a full redesign. You can edit it right on the page instead of digging through settings, with more room to make it your own.

You can also add alt text to your avatar and header image now, so people using screen readers get them described too.

Posting is more flexible. You can put photos and a poll on the same post, which you couldn't do before.

Quoting is easier as well: drag a post's link into the compose box and it quotes it. And emoji autocomplete finally matches letters in the middle of a word, not just at the start.

Notifications are calmer. You can filter out the ones from bots, so automated accounts stop crowding your alerts. Custom filters can be exported and imported too, so moving your setup between accounts is painless.

For folks running servers: you can require two-factor auth for specific roles, and give visitors a new landing page that blends your about page with recent local posts.

One last feature, and it's our favourite. The email newsletter option lets you turn your public posts into a mailing list, so people without a fediverse account can subscribe and read along.

On toot.community we're switching it on for anyone who's donated at least once. DM this account and we'll get you set up.

There's also a long list of accessibility fixes for keyboard and screen reader users. That's 4.6.

Update when your server's ready, and thanks as always to everyone who chips in to keep this place running.
