    • Gallery posts, which is an image post with multiple images in it, compatible with Mastodon and Pixelfed. Check out this example from Mastodon.

    • "Reposters" as a separate thing from "Bots" with the same Show and Hide options for filtering that bots have. Reposters are more targeted, with higher quality content than true bots and often have a human operator writing comments. However many people find this inauthentic so now they can be filtered out. More details

    • /c/microblogs can show posts from people you're following OR all posts.

    • Recent hashtags shown on the home page sidebar.

    • Support for receiving posts with jpegxl images.

    • Communities can have a default hashtag for new posts - posters can edit or remove it if they want.

    For admins:

    • Option to manually approve posts by new accounts, to cut down on spam while having open registrations (no approval on the new account). This will let people dip their toes in without waiting.

    • Easily contact other instance admins, see /admin/instances

    • Vote manipulation detection tools for simple sockpuppets and complex coordinated voting networks. See /admin/voting

    • Serial downvoter report showing who made lots of downvotes against a single person in a short time.

    • Other bot detection tools - e.g. easily spot unnatural runs of very quick post creation.

    • Display list of alts on user profiles to more easily investigate activity by alts.

    • Filter emoji with keywords rather than importing absolutely everything - this will speed up the emoji reaction dialog.

    • Identify instances likely to be used by spammers in future. See /admin/instances?filter=liability

    • Microblog posts with no replies can be automatically deleted - set the MICROBLOG_CONTENT_RETENTION environment variable to how many months you want to keep them for.

    To upgrade from 1.7.x

    git pull
    git checkout v1.8.x

    Then,

    ./deploy.sh or ./deploy-docker.sh

For me it was the missing support for "auto fill" when using Link posts on Voyager. Small issue, but annoying enough. Also PieFed.social blocking some stuff without it being obvious why at the beginning. I could have changed instances though.

PF is finally starting to follow PyLova’s lead seeing as it’s had the image posts, sidebar hashtags, and default hash tags for so long. This whole update feels like PF has no original ideas for its future.

PyLova still has far more features and none of that vote limit junk.

What do the multi-image posts look like when federated to Lemmy? Even if I don't see the extra images, I hope there's at least some sign I'm missing something so I can go looking elsewhere.

  • You can see your up and downed content on PyLova.

Slightly off topic, but is hosting a PieFed instance becoming the better option over a lemmy one these days? Any thoughts there?

    There’s 4 or 5 at the moment. I know of anarchist.nexus, quokk.au, and piefed.zeromedia.vip

On PyLova they show up in a Lemmy posts body on software that cannot support them.

PyLova is piefed but with more features and without all the bad decisions. I’d say that’s the better option to host.

My comment is probably biaised because i'm part of PieFed team (translation, wiki, idea, issue...). I hope more devs will join us 🙂

On the moderation side, features, PieFed reached a good maturity. We have good tools against bot, and other tools that improve our community. I dunno how other fediverse software handle that.

On UI, we are fine, there is a bottom nav bar, a search bar it works well on mobile. It is visually clean except lengthy community and menu. There is room for improvement compared to Lemmy and Mbin. It will be adressed soon 🙂

The main thing that most Lemmy users will miss are mobile app because PieFed API are not complete or app are in developpement. Also that's because PieFed improve and grow at a very fast space.

However, you can use PWA (progressive web app), it works well. Also Lemmy v1.0 will catch up some piefed feature.

If you are interested, you can try it on yunohost or create an alt to try it. 🙂

Piefed support autofill, maybe it miss an API or the app don't have it yet.

Dunno but you can request it 🙂

Thank you for your thoughtful reply and taking the time to do so. Yah I am currently running a lemmy instance that is working quite well with some minor issues (pict-rs not generating thumbnails from local files that are uploaded, and federating to certain instances like dbzero). So my curiosity is really from the perspective of is the grass really greener or are there significant benefits to starting up a new instance running PieFed as I assume there are no sane pathways to migrate from a lemmy instance to a PieFed one. Either way I appreciate your response, things to think about for $3000 Alex! 🤣

I would say yes but with some trade of.

Imho, the best way is to create an account because there is so many features that i end up writting a book.

    • merging community under the same umbrella : opensource@lemmy.world, opensource@lemmy.ml... = topic (managed by sysadmin), feed (managed by users)
    • merging comment from post with the same link (access to comment from the threadiverse AND mastodon, peertube...)
    • hashtag (improve discovenability mastodon users can find our content and we can find content related to some to those hashtag)
    • flair (community filter)
    • blocklist (keyword, domain, flair, user, community...)
    • blocklist of domain related to far-right, spam
    • tool to detect AI, bot, spam..
    • following mastodon users

Mbin is also great and deserve some love.

Threads has introduced extremely strict rules for servers that want to federate. That's hilarious, considering just as soon as this whole Threads fediverse integration project was announced, a whole bunch of prominent fediverse hosts joined up and blocked them en masse. Like, fuck it, we're not talking to Facebook, nope nope nope. (Turbo Based.) (Check your Mastodon instance. Chances are they're still blocking threads.net.)

I think what you are referring to is not content so much as that new communities needed - in the past - to have been added by someone before others could find them in the community listing. This was not restricted to admins though & people like Blaze had an army of alts and did much of that, as did I on my own instances as well. This was necessary before the first post could come in from each new community, needing to be performed on a per-community basis. However, PieFed made an improvement to not need to do this anymore, and then Lemmy followed suit as well, and now the whole process is much easier. Although it gives Lemmy.ml specifically veto power in that if a community is banned or the instance it is on is defederated from Lemmy.ml, then the automatic pulling in of the community name is no longer done. Technically admins - or again, I think anyone - can always add it the old way, but only if you know that it exists and how to make that happen (which isn't hard but requires crafting a URL rather than mere clicking on links). Also, the admins can designate a different instance than Lemmy.ml, though Lemmy.ml is set as the default, so this procedure is opt-out. Those PyLova devs are hella impressive!!! Rimu seems less interested in the Threadiverse these days and more in interoperability with Mastodon, despite how most of us seem to not even want that, and Mbin already exists. It's okay for him to work on whatever he wants, but it makes it all the more impressive to see how responsive the PyLova is to the needs of the people on the Threadiverse. I don't think that most instances do delete old content. Lemmy.world self-reportedly has content from decades in the past from nodeBB but I think their database got corrupted and I don't trust that. However, here is an example on my own instance https://discuss.online/post/5497584 showing the retaining of a post to a community on Lemmy.ml from 8 years ago. The PieFed thing was once again another of Rimu's rants against "unserious" meme content. He is obviously entitled to not feel forced into providing unlimited hosting for images, but I am saying that the limitation built into the PieFed software and enacted on e.g. PieFed.social may not be universally applied. I could well see e.g. lemmynsfw.app choosing differently to retain every image forever. Unfortunately there's almost no way to know short of directly asking the admin team, who may not even be aware themselves what settings are in place on their own machines. This is a limitation of all Fediverse software that I've seen, including Lemmy and Mbin, so not just PieFed. Though PyLova does have the most transparency of all of them... and yet I haven't seen even PyLova expose whatever these settings are to the public. Even though someone might make a choice as to which instance they want to make an account on (or even start up their own) if they could find the answer. I think even subscribable blocklists would only be the first part of an overall answer. Like UBlock Origin, it's going to require people to manufacture and maintain those lists. But... at least the software will support that now, so yes indeed this is the very important, crucial first step!!

@SpaceLifeFormIt's the Signal Protocol via libsignal, not handmade. Your message reaches the server the moment you send it, so logout never loses it and delivery doesn't depend on your session. The server only holds public keys and ciphertext, held 30 days for pickup. Each message is bound to the sender's identity key, so the recipient can confirm who sent it, verified by a safety number. Logout only wipes local keys, affecting old history on a new device. Key backup is planned.

@mooooooo congrats, this is an accurate summary. We will never be able to create awesome, different, diverse, own things if we do not ignore mastodon for the "alpha". It does not necessary mean that it will not work somehow in the end.Apart from that the Client-To-Server protocol, Collections and the multilanguage properties …We are building menschys to make a fully compliant Server and a "reference client", then taxiteam and redaktor as diverse clients … Following you now. Co-orged the official ActivityPub Confs e.g. in Prague, am elected Social CG Policy Group Lead but if you interested, what Clemens, me and others are building, see the readme chaos https://codeberg.org/Menschys/fedi-codebase [we are starting to move to codeberg]
