EmojiReact vs. Like w/ content?

Technical Discussion

  • @julian @mike What solution, sending two activities? I don't think emoji-reply is useful on its own, only a small number of servers recognize it as emoji reaction.

    No, just a regular reply with nothing but an emoji in its content.

    Not sure how that'd work for custom emoji of course.

    I personally wouldn't send emoji reactions this way but one can argue semantically they achieve the same effect.

  • EmojiReact is used by Pleroma.

    Idk about others, I started with EmojiReact but then switched to Like - Mastodon users can see a "favorite" that way.

    @silverpill@mitra.social">@silverpill @julian Like at least has got the advantage to use the existing vocabulary. At Friendica we currently process both but we can't send - exactly because of the problem that we're still undecided which way to go.

    A problem is that you could send a negative emoji - that would be received as a like (which is normally interpretet as positive) for example on Mastodon. And this can be confusing.

    @heluecht @silverpill @technical-discussion @julian it makes no sense to me to turn emoji reactions into likes. They are inherently different things. If one wants to support emoji reactions in their software, go look at how people are actually using them in everyday life. There are a totally different form of communication then a like. You can look at a popular user on Misskey to see how they are being used in reality

    @liaizon@wake.st what about something in the middle... converting <img class="not-responsive emoji" src="/emoji/ap/heart/activitypub.space" title="❤" /> and <img class="not-responsive emoji" src="/emoji/ap/%2B1/activitypub.space" title="👍" /> into a like?

    @julian I'm not personally opposed to that, tho it seems still sorta silly

    @julian @silverpill Sorry to go off, but this exact struggle is why I find Fedi implementation so frustrating. I'll wait until there's an official "we made up our damn minds" spec before spending any of my limited time and effort on it lol

    @mooooooo@qaf.men heheh, I get that too. Sometimes I can't resist doing it anyway because the feature itself is interesting.

    I just know for this FEP itself, it was descriptive rather than prescriptive... which is fancy terminology for saying "somebody did it first, so we're describing it after-the-fact instead of telling you how to do it from scratch"

    <img class="not-responsive emoji" src="/emoji/ap/shrug/activitypub.space" title="🤷" />

    So whenever FEPs like that happen, they're usually more open-ended and contain multiple approaches to reach the same goal.

    C'est la vie.

    @liaizon @julian The problem is that there is a long list of positive emojis, a not completely short list of negative ones and a lot in the middle. And for a user selecting one of them it can be kind of confusing to not completely know if their selected emoji will be converted or not.

    Thanks @heluecht@pirati.ca! It's good to know that Friendica processes both. It means NodeBB defaulting to sending EmojiReact is likely the correct path forward.

    We support both Emoji reactions and upvotes, which are translated to EmojiReact and Like, respectively. <img class="not-responsive emoji" src="/emoji/ap/blush/activitypub.space" title="😊" />

    @silverpill@mitra.social lost signal only if the UX for both emoji reactions and likes are collapsed.

    Otherwise, right signal for the right intent?
