Friendica network integration
-
- What are people's thoughs about enabling friendica to access posts from places like #twitter #Reddit, #facebook or other non-activitypub sources? I guess this might blow up a storm. I really like using friendica but I do wish I could at least monitor what is going on with people who haven't made the move from those networks and perhaps even post links to content on friendica and activitypub networks back into those networks. That might even encourage people to make the move across.
Its just a thought. I'm not really expecting this to go anywhere - I know that its completely dependent on people with the skills to make such a thing.
I know that there are #sociallistening and cross posting tools out there and API access on a individual basis is possible.

@abeorch I am all for interoperability but the main problem is that commercial networks don't really want it so they don't make it easy and sometimes actively prevent it. If I remember correctly there was Facebook interoperability a while ago and also there was/is Twitter connector which I tried to set up myself. It required access to API and Twitter just rejected my request (which got me annoyed so I deleted my Twitter account after their arrogant refusal).
Friendica supports RSS though and you can make channels broadcasting posts from an RSS source (or several) so one way to create limited access is to use that and a tool like RSS bridge which creates RSS feeds from some of these sources.
I don't think Friendica has enough dev power to actively support dedicated connectors for networks that don't want it though (like youtube-dl does, for example) - which requires constant maintenance and also can draw unwanted legal attention as it can be seen as hacking.

@abeorch Both Twitter and Facebook don't offer public API access to access their timeline. Twitter only allows posting - and that is what our Twitter connector does.
With Reddit I only know that there had been some issues in the past with their rate limits.
We currently have got bidirectional connectors with Tumblr and the Atmosphere (Bluesky).

Yeah ..I think the reason for the post was that I started looking at social listening tools like #mixpost and content cross posting tools like #postiz and thought - hmm yes does look like a pain to connect but would be useful to have in friendica. I get that they are trying to maintain their walled gardens. -

@shuro Yeah do understand. I think I just had the desire and writing it out was a chance to express it rather than an expectation of being able to achieve it.
I'm a big RSS user in friendica.

@abeorch
let it be -
@lassegismo I should be better at this. These things come up when I'm frustrated.

I am enjoying running on version 2026.05 though. -

I had a look at git.sr.ht/~cloutier/dotmakeup - I'm tempted to try and selfhost an instance and see if I can pull some of the accounts that I am interested in from #instagram and #twitter.
