@kathhayhoe @whysharksmatter It sounds like you hoped Mastodon would work better than it did. Do you have a sense of why it did not?

@kathhayhoe @whysharksmatter
I am happy for you that you found a good replacement for what was Twitter.But for me the Bluesky ownership is a red flag: VCs want to make money, lots of money. At some point in time they will ask for returns and they will sacrifice everything that seems nice about this platform now.
We got a *tiny* glimpse of that already, when they authenticated a bunch of accounts of the current US regime (eg White House, DHS).
Bluesky is no safe space!

@integerpoet Much more than "a sense". (I bookmarked this)

Attached: 1 image Comparing the percentage of comments that are negative versus neutral/positive on each platform, you can also see that (a) Twitter has always had proportionately more trolls than other platforms, but also (b) trolling has massively increased post-Musk. Note 1: The reason there were no negative comments on FB is because my page there has been shadow-banned since Aug 2018 when climate change & clean energy were added to the list of politically sensitive topics and FB refused (twice) to verify my identity, the step they claim is needed to post on those topics. So only a tiny fraction of the people who already follow my page see my posts there. They are not shared beyond that tiny bubble. Note 2: it's also interesting that negative comments on Twitter/X, LinkedIn and Threads are nearly 100% denial, whereas negative comments on Mastodon are 100% from people worried about climate but who are mansplaining me or who want to harass or attack me for different reasons (e.g. not explaining the science the way they think I should, saying that climate action can make a difference, standing firm on the social science of effective communication, being a person of faith, etc.). This platform is #1 for "friendly fire," which is why I still post but don't engage here very much. It's not good for my mental health. If you want to see more of my posts here though, no worries: I have a bluesky bridge account @katharinehayhoe.com@bsky.brid.gy Onward!

@kathhayhoe So glad to follow you on the Fediverse. While it’s unfortunate BS is not federated, every post you make on Mastodon is appreciated by me.

-
@kathhayhoe @whysharksmatter Bluesky is just Twitter 2.0. It WILL turn out the same way. Federated is the only way forward.
-
@kathhayhoe @whysharksmatter I’m glad scientists are finding a replacement for Twitter!
-
@RolfBly @kathhayhoe Ah. That sounds like a toxic stew of lefty infighting and asperger syndrome. It tracks.
-
@integerpoet The asperger bit could be jumping to conclusions. The infighting bit sure isn't.
-
@RolfBly @kathhayhoe I feel like this is an opportunity to use an LLM to ironically satirize myself, but that would be so recursive that the universe might implode.

@kathhayhoe @whysharksmatter@bird.makeup
I’m happy for you you’ve found a place for your work to feel valued
-
@TheOneSwit @kathhayhoe @whysharksmatter Exactly, Mastodon is neutral and transparent.
Bluesky is basically a Twitter clone with no real federation. ActivityPub is best.
-
I hope you have continued success and enjoyment with #Bluesky. I think it's likely to go the same route as #TwitterX and I don't use it.
I'm especially convinced of this since profiles for #convictedFelon #sexOffender #DonaldTrump, #ICE, #DHS, etc. have been approved/authorized by Bluesky admins.
#Mastodon > Bluesky

@f @kathhayhoe @whysharksmatter
Mastodon has no algorithm that randomly show you something. Bluesky can decide what and how much you see and what you could send. They can control it, they can control you and they can see and search whatever you do. And they can sell your data for adds and political propaganda.
Also they get rich from your support. -
@kathhayhoe @whysharksmatter Give it some time; the algorithm will come to Bluesky (if it hasn't already done so) and turn it into the same crap you saw on Twitter.
I'm happy right where I am, here on Mastodon.
-
There is indeed an algorithm on Bluesky. The default feed that users get when they sign up is an algorithmic feed.
-
@mastodonmigration @kathhayhoe Everything's great as long as the algorithm gives you what you want. But when it doesn't, then you're seeing crap that a machine decided to show you.
I'm constantly dealing with that on YouTube. Watch one video about making a flourless oatmeal cake and the next thing you know it it's showing you a thousand crappy recipes.
