@stefan the nice part about the fediverse is that contrarian ragebait doesnt really go viral, so i can just be snarky in peace without worrying too much that im contributing to bait

@liaizon to also give a serious answer: i think it is a much bigger problem that it is very unclear to people what the advantage of joining mas.to or mastodon.world over mastodon.social is

way to fix the size discrepancy between m.s. and the rest is to make the rest more attractive and distinct imo, and focusing on the promotion of m.s. feels like it detracts from deeper problems

@laurenshof @liaizon To also give a serious answer also for a moment between the screaming, joiners don't understand what federation means, so maybe m.s should be customized in to allow people to join and then actively show them other communities once they're 'on-boarded' and give them the chance to be handed-off. You want to present a vibrant and busy feed to get peoples interest, and then widen their view once they've got going.

That the mastodon team can't or won't develop the kind of relationship and understanding with other servers that would allow them to offer other defaults matters more than people usually recognize.

That other servers can't distinguish themselves in any meaningful way matters a lot.

Back in the day I remember when you registered for a hotmail account you could choose between several domains... it was entirely for vanity, but this is similar.

Obviously not the same because instance moderation rules and such matter more in social media, but still...

Vanity domains... The instance chooser is basically just that, and any attempts to ascribe additional importance to it is unnecessary.
