@MichalBryxi we have pretty good docs at https://tags.pub/ and an intro blog post at

@zhenech but shouldn't relays fix that problem of content discovery? @MichalBryxi
-
@evan but that means if it works globally, every AP post with x hashtags will be boosted x times by default? I would not mind if this happened quietly, but when I get boost notifications every time I use hashtags, I would also block that service. There should be something like "silent boost". @MichalBryxi

@kleisli @MichalBryxi Mastodon has that!

@kleisli @MichalBryxi interesting! What redundancy do you think there is?
-
@kleisli Basically the reason for my first toot. I don’t care about bots doing something in the background. But I don’t want to have to actively do something to filter it out / manage.
-
@evan there are hashtags to cluster posts. And tags.pub is clustering them again with boosts from the "hashtag accounts".
I really want to learn more about the AP (and AT) protocol, but I don't know a lot yet. Am I right that the AP protocol only enables a server to see a post when it is on a federated server and federating means you have to store *all* the posts from all federated servers just to be able to filter for one hashtag for example?
@MichalBryxi -
@evan thank you, but I would still want to be notified when I get boosted by someone else. @MichalBryxi
-
@kleisli @MichalBryxi great. I can't do that for you. You can make a feature request to Mastodon to hide notifications from particular servers, or you can block tags.pub or add hashtag NoTagsPub to your bio.

Oh, cool! So, yes, I'd highly recommend the book I wrote for O'Reilly Media about ActivityPub:

For your question, no, federating DOES NOT mean you store all the posts from every federated server!
It just means that people on your server can follow people on the other server.
The only way that things go from one server to another is if someone on server A follows someone on server B. (Or if they send a DM, but those aren't public).
The existence of tags.pub does not mean that every post on tags.pub gets copied to every server.
Thanks for asking, though!

@smallcircles@social.coop who says fediverse accounts need to be people?
I'd love to have a fedi account for every book in my local public library
-
Fascinating idea! And stuff like this is going to spark many more..
Would you Follow the book in order to see when it’s back on the shelf?
-
@benpate@mastodon.social at minimum, tagging it would show up as a comment under the page.
Follow it for updates (yeah, for distribution status), maybe DM it or send it
Offerto put it on hold
-
> who says fediverse accounts need to be people?
Certainly not me. I'm thinking on an actor-based service-oriented fedi, which more closely represents actor model. Where the social network is a pure social graph of addressible actors, that can be introspected for the services they provide.
Yes, a book might be an actor, as well as the shelf

-
@smallcircles@social.coop the shelf? Why not one for every member of the Dewey Decimal System 🤯
-
@benpate @julian@activitypub.space @smallcircles In case you haven't come across it yet, https://millsfield.sfomuseum.org/blog/2024/03/12/activitypub/ will be a fun read!

I mean, I just did every search query as an actor.. and this isn’t much different.
Every *potential* number is ready to go, and just gets a db entry (and actual behavior) once someone interacts with it.
