Thanks for speaking up Rudy (even though he did throw a dig at in the thread). Good luck! I fear that only now will we discover the limits there, after millions have made the move from etc to that "decentralized" platform.

I'd love to hear more from the other defenders of . As Elon said, is demonstrating that free speech does not mean freedom of reach. You may have your PDS but who effectively decides who gets to see your posts?

Trying to understand the situation. Bluesky banned a Blacksky user and now the use can not be seen on Bluesky or Blacksky. Blacksky is doing a crash program so the the banned user will be visible on Blacksky, but they still won't be visible to anyone on Bluesky.

    Is that right?

I'm not 100% re visibility on blacksky but I believe so.

I've tried to follow the blacksky story before this week and it's been a lot of back and forth about how truly independent they are. if you listen to the full podcasts talking about it, it starts as "we're indy" but then ends up as "we're almost there". same with other boosters of AT. they seem to admit the problems eventually.

but I'm very glad Rudy is now openly addressing this. moreso and sooner than others.

There is a problem with the Barnes and Noble analogy. Yes, if you are on mastodon.social and they ban you, you will lose your data. But if you are on hachyderm and mastodon.social blocks you, you don't lose you data (and you can still be seen by the rest of the Fedi). In the analogy, it's like the later case. As long as you trust your server provider you data is fine. It's the same for both network protocols.

Yeah, but feel bad for the guy. What's happening is that there is an adversarial relationship developing and Bluesky holds all the cards. This is not going to end well for Blacksky.

This has always been the problem with corporate sponsored standards. If the technology host company is not fully and completely committed to open competition with their standard clients it can never work.
