Dear Fedi friends,
I'm pretty fired up exposing the ridiculousness of #WSocial, a new social network purported to be a European alternative to X that launched at Davos (yikes).
The French press devoted many articles to it (meanwhile: crickets about the Fediverse).
Before I go full steam ahead grabbing domain names and creating a web site that shows the weaknesses of W / suggests to check out the Fediverse instead, I want to put it to you: should I do it?
@_elena Maybe do it in phases, grab the domains just in case, and then add sites if W builds any steam at all? But if there's French media attention there, that time might already have come.
@_elena I think that we need more "why/how you should join the Fediverse" rather than "why you should not use platform X, Y, W".
We (as in: the internet) spoke loudly about why not using certain type of softwares and platform and it didn't really made a substantial difference.
I think we need to focus on bringing people (and make them stay) here rather than scare them about another software or platform.
@_elena Hard to say if it's worth it at this point. Maybe it lands on its face right away, but if it does receive attention and lots of actual people create accounts there, having information about that site would be useful.
Does it need to be its own website in that case? Not sure.
@_elena in my opinion, it's a waste of energy. I'd rather focus bringing more politicians here
Over the past few days, the @leavex@mastodon.social account has gained almost 500 new followers. Until recently, the Bluesky account (@leavex.eu@bsky.brid.gy) had nearly 1000 followers and was ahead of the Fediverse version. That situation has now reversed. This shift seems closely tied to the recent revamp of the #LeaveX campaign, which now includes statistics on how many politicians are still using X. Increased visibility also played an important role: the project was shared widely by @randahl@mastodon.social, an account with a large following, which likely contributed significantly to the surge in followers. What’s particularly interesting is that the Mastodon account consistently receives more attention and interaction than the Bluesky account. @_elena It’s ironic that the supposed European alternative to X and the answer to independence from U.S. tech is… using “American” ATProto instead of “European” Mastodon.
Turns out, W may run on ATProto. Dope. Probably should've led with that in the initial PR cycle, and I wish they had given props to other folks building ATProto infra in Europe as well. Not too late to do so! [contains quote post or other embedded content]

@_elena Press is often lazy. Coverage is often a matter of whether or not Press media received a ready-to-publish communicate. That's why most private orgs, with com teams, get covered while many communities and public-service associations are not.

FUN FACT wafrn does fedi and bsky so you would be givin a better service than default W and you could argue it was a wafrn reference wich is older than W social
@_elena No, please don't. Spend your beautiful energy and time on building and contributing to what we already have.
Don't waste a second on deconstructing, arguing against stuff we don't control.
Make more videos like you did before, the Mastodon / Fediverse intro video. It was beautiful and awesome.
That's what you should do. Build, don't destroy.

@_elena they seem like great domains to start hosting fedi services. they go looking for euro-corp they find international co-op

@palin Europe is finally taking steps toward independence from US IT infrastructure. It’s likely too little, too late, but it’s still a move in the right direction. While I appreciate the effort, I suspect the Fediverse might have been a better solution. That said, I cynically believe this initiative will fail miserably without much outside interference

A video addressing the nearly 60% of Members of the European Parliament still active on X would be beautiful.
What would happen if prominent politicians had official, active accounts on the Fediverse? Public attention would certainly follow, as would journalists, who are obligated to track and report on political figures.
People don't leave the Fediverse solely because of technical hurdles. Many arrive, look around, and simply don't find enough reasons to stay. Retention is not just a usability problem, but also a matter of social density and relevance. With a sufficiently large and visible group of active participants, the Fediverse could generate its own gravity and flourish beyond the tech-savvy community.
@_elena its probably better not to sabotage EU alternatives, but by grabbing domains the fediverse could be injected into the news cycle, if done with a coherent message to the media.
