Israel’s secret ‘wink’ deal with Google and Amazon UNMASKED
To secure a $1.2 billion cloud contract with Israel, Google and Amazon agreed to a secret "winking mechanism", that is a scheme designed to tip off the Israeli government when foreign courts force them to hand over its data, a Guardian investigation reveals.
In the leaked docs obtained, the publication says the tech giants agreed to hide signals in financial payments to Israel to bypass gag orders.
The system works like this:
Coded transfers: Payments were pegged to a country's dialing code. If a country with dial code +1 (USA) seizes data, Amazon/Google would pay 1,000 shekels. If it's a +39 country code (Italy), they would pay 3,900 shekels.
