@markmetz But, are we sure the mushroom packagings will not evolve into blobs that will grow and eat us in the end ?
-
-
@markmetz there was a documentary about this on BBC2 like 15 years ago and it looked like such a great development. I never heard anything of it again. I hope it's finally taking off.
-
@markmetz I love this, but I can't share it because there's no alt text.
-
@Guillotine_Jones @markmetz pretty much anyone can make it, using whatever feedstock biowaste is readily available in your region, and you don't need massive machines or anything, so it certainly supports that kind of grassroots "at scale."
Eben Bayer was pushing this back in 2010, and you'd think by now it would be the default packaging technology, but I guess he patented the shit out of this whole space which is why that hasn't happened yet.

@markmetz How is this better than pulped cellulose or cornstarch, which is already in use?
As with the other plant based polystyrene substitutes, there are likely applications it doesn’t work due to permeability.
-
@markmetz amazing but there have to be side effects.
using fungi surely has side effects. Just like using aluminium or other metals or .. plastics -
@markmetz Wonderful!
And undoubtedly, the Fediverse is the only place where I can see something with #solarpunk hash on the top of the trending list. Keep up the great work, fediversers.
(searching for the company may be difficult, though)
-
@markmetz also how old are the people from this video now? It looks like it's a video from the 90s
-
@markmetz yes more, more, more please
-
@domo @markmetz I found the company site:
https://magicalmushroom.com/ -
@jor @markmetz always, always be aware of the blob...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-heIT3L9Qg -
@IngridHbn @markmetz Exactly.

-
@markmetz i remember this tech from ~20 years ago at some very hippy forum, someone was making insulation sheets with mycelium. Great if theyve found niche that can work with it.
-
@markmetz The #goodNews: It's no more 'only' #solarpunk, it's already industry (the video seems to be quite old). Here in France, we have companies producing #packages from #mycelium, hemp, algues, or plant waste.
Also in other EU countries like Belgium: https://www.permafungi.be/en - which is cofounded by the EU!The French anti-plastic laws have accelerated these developments.
-
@admin Why should it?
Mycelium packages are checked just as meticulously as everything else for suitability and characteristics regulations before they are ready for the market. They are used for goods as a substitute for polystyrene https://www.permafungi.be/en/nos-clients -
@SilverArrows Those packages are already in our shops. There are several European companies producing them. (You can find some in the comments here).
-
-
@c_salem Such projects are already funded by the EU, e.g. the Belgian company Permafungi.
And the packages are in the shops. In France e.g. https://www.embelium.fr/ - and outside the EU you have Mushroom Packaging UK.
