If there was a single button to permanently* disable all AI features I would use it.

And so on for other "features".

Using about:config to change the state of a list of switches to ensure that all AI is turned off, switches that may, at some point in the future be removed from about:config is not going to make me want to be a FireFox user again.

*as in disabled for evermore.

@transicorn @Gargron From my experience, Mozilla doesn't change that much from update to update. I haven't messed with the user.js file to disable anything major other than the AI stuff. I sometimes edit it to enable a new feature that is disabled by default.

Librewolf's default config is too aggressive, and I need to change too many things to make it usable for normal web browsing. It's not worth the hassle for me, and there's a delay in updates.

@transicorn @Gargron I think Waterfox is in a sweet spot between vanilla Firefox and Librewolf.

Having a customized user.js ensures that when you reinstall Firefox, you don't need to touch the settings page.

@Gargron such a shame Firefox stopped being a real alternative. It has a better core, but they are just afraid doing it differently than Chrome for some reason

@chemicalheadset You can't be for real, Firefox dev tools are far more extensive than what Chrome offers.

@Gargron chromium ones have nice integration with vscode and a set of matching keyboard shortcuts. Plus I really like the profiler, but this is all just preference I suppose.

@Gargron Although Brave is based on Chrome, it is a completely different browser. By default, it blocks ads and much more, and it doesn't lag even with 100 tabs open. You just have to try it. And in addition, there is the Duckduckgo.com search engine.

@Gargron unfortunately ram usage is only part of the equation. Especially on mobile, Firefox (and/or Waterfox) regularly scroll terribly, break sites, or just load extremely slowly. As a web dev it's also frustratingly slow at implementing new standards. I want to use something other than Chromium, but it's becoming rather difficult.

@Gargron heck just today I was trying to use Mastodon on my Pixel 10 with Firefox and scrolling my timeline was like a slideshow. No issues on Chromium browsers.

@Gargron I've tried Chrome on and off for many years.
Never managed to get on with it.
Most of the plugins don't work right and barely any privacy/adblock plugins work at all.
Pages would render only half way a lot of the time, other times IE would load instead and show the xml of the page that the link to download something would use.

@KalenXI @Gargron the absolute best chromium-based browser I’ve ever used was Stainless. It didn’t exist for long and it hasn’t been updated since 2011 (!), but it was still the only Chromium browser that didn’t feel like bloatware.

Vivaldi showed promise initially, but it’s now so over-laden with features that it feels more like an operating system than a browser.

I just want a bare-bones stripped back browser that blocks all ads and AI bullshit. That shouldn’t be as rare as it is.

@Gargron Out of curiosity, did you check Helium vs Chromium? I was wondering if you noticed a difference tho I am quite pleased with Firefox (let’s see if I still am if they stuff AI weirdness in it…)

@gargron@mastodon.social I realized I was not in the same league of software developer as my colleagues when I built a PC and put in 4GB of RAM while they'd go 16 and up.

This was back in the day before Electron apps, so think Notepad++ and Sublime Text, truly lightweight stuff.

You are incentivized to build fast shit when constrained by your RAM, I'll tell you that.

@Gargron Now take that information and couple it with the fact that a lot of business apps are now Electron-based. The only thing worse than running out of memory because of Chromium is running out of memory because you have 3 wholly separate instances of Chromium running with no shared resources.
