@stefan I aplaud the effort. I think the world might be different today if social media had begun with a requirement for positive ID, instead of being able to hide behind a pseudonym.

@stefan In the article it says the data is “stored decentralized in Europe”. But no info if it’s compatible with other platforms? A closed platform where all needs to be photo verified seems like it’s uncertain if it will work..
-
@Lockpro There are good reasons for wanting to be anonymous online, though:

This is the first series in the 21-22 Perspectives on Public Purpose blog.
The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs (www.belfercenter.org)
And there are many who post some truly vile stuff with their full name and photo attached, so, I don't know.
-
@doktorzjivago Yeah, I don't really see a point in this. Maybe it is just so that they can say they tried and it didn't work out.
-
@stefan Great. Now China will launch Y and Russia Z. Alphabet remains stable.
-
@stefan looks like a Davos stunt, a bid for LinkedIn fame.
I’m fairly confident we’ll have forgotten the whole thing in under four weeks from now.
-
@slothrop Yeah, this is what I'm thinking.
-
"If you didn't build it, you can't control it and/or censor it"?
-
@stefan @Lockpro The issue never was anonymity, but lack of accountability. Both for platforms and users.
If you post something vile, your account is suspended and it's a hassle to re-register you'll think twice before doing it again. But the current socal media standard¹ is you can post something vile with your full name and employer visible and still continue as if there's no problem.

@stefan It's a startup using big words, is all I can see. Not sure where this "European organisations" stuff comes from.
-
@jwildeboer @stefan yeah, all I read is, "former ministers and business representatives, primarily from Sweden" hatched their plan at Davos. Definitely something for Europeans to be wary of, a C-Level exec looking to increase their net worth, having cut their teeth at eBay.

@stefan so long as they federate it, good. if not, they get a weak one.
-
@stefan Really? ‘W. A step ahead from X.’
Can I get my branding money now? -
@falcennial Yeah, I don't see anything about federating. And don't really expect that happening. But I guess we'll see!
-
@stefan oh okay so barely anyone will use it then. I guess it's probably fine for publishing notifications from government officials and institutions though.
-
They should build it in such a way that they can link to approved fediverse servers.
-
@stefan ooph. No, thankyew.
-
@stefan @briankrebs It’s not. On the Fediverse they can’t make people verify themselves with ID documents but on this new platform they’re making, they can do that.
-
@MisuseCase Yep, that's what I'm thinking. https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/115929732351043465

@stefan "European organizations" like who ? Also, this is going nowhere.
