Not only because you run your server on your device, but mainly because you can own your identity with your own domain name.

My mistake was making it easy to run the server on your device, but not to get your own identity.
That will be my challenge in the coming months.

PS: I have no funding for this project and I work alone, so yes, it takes time 🙂

LOLA retains that, but enables a more comprehensive ability to migrate from one domain to another - thus detaching the person from the domain. This fits much better to how people think names and identities work, than the ATproto model which forces identities into domain names. Good!

So, it sounds like part of the solution needs to be something like {app will automatically register a domain or subdomain for you, as an option}...?

Or does the solution need to go beyond DNS somehow?

Just look at everyone who could change their bsky.social nick into a sovereign name, have all the resources and help available to do it, yet do not.

It requires some knowledge of DNS. Otherwise, your identity depends on the relay you use. The idea would be to add support for LOLA, so you could move your account to any server that supports it, not only Holos relays. It would go further than the current independence, in a simple way.
