@evan@cosocial.ca explaining that "the fediverse is quiet" is a bug, not a feature.
Good thing we have a solution for it <img class="not-responsive emoji" src="https://activitypub.space/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/1f63c.png?v=8161d5c9b56" title="

@evan@cosocial.ca "if the Fediverse is about connecting people to people, then Ostatus is part of the Fediverse. However usage has been dropping off.
...
Philosophically yes, practically, heading towards no"

Question regarding types of interactions. Asker prefers more private correspondence between friends and family. Is the Fediverse for me?
@ozoned@btfree.social says no, it's up to you to decide how much or how little you want your circle to be. You can use the internet your way!
@reiver@mastodon.social giving a shoutout to Frequency! @jesseplusplus@mastodon.social
-
Question regarding EEE and whether Mastodon is doing it.
@evan@cosocial.ca I don't think EEE killed XMPP, it is up to us and our responsibility to make the Fediverse exciting and interesting enough that they (platforms) don't leave.
"Network effect is everybody's responsibility"

-
@ozoned@btfree.social arguing that fediverse usage should become so ubiquitous that we don't even know we're on it.

-
Q: "the good thing about Pleroma is its easy to spin up, the bad news is its easy to spin up for trolls. How will you combat this?"
@evan@cosocial.ca "when you open up systems it means not everybody buys into the same behavioural norms... we have on the Fediverse a culture of manual and artisinal trust and safety mechanisms due to little trust in automated systems... we have a chance to be building these trust and safety systems (like @roost@hachyderm.io), but we're building them, and we're doing it step by step.
@ozoned@btfree.social advocates for trust chains and calls out to @benpate@mastodon.social's work on Endorsements

For @django@social.coop, here are the rules for Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock. It was how the panelists could have been chosen, but instead regular rock paper scissors was used.

Missed the first half of @dansup@mastodon.social's presentation because I had to grab my laptop.
Here's Dan talking about the share sheet in Loops

-
-
Interop bingo, I love it.

-
@dansup@mastodon.social also mentioned that Loops runs their own relay service, called Project Mobius. I wonder if it follows FEP ae0c
-
Here's Pixelfed/Loops/Sup's funding model. Just patreon, github sponsors, and nlnet for grant-funded milestones.
@dansup@mastodon.social says when it comes to money, there are always strings attached ("That's not villainy, that's just gravity"). That's why he wants to bootstrap his own fundraising through end-user channels.

-
@evan@cosocial.ca asks an important question about the "For You" feed and how it works.
@dansup@mastodon.social says it's completely opt-outable via the app settings, if you don't want that kind of tracking. Additionally, the metrics gathered only affect your own For You feed, and it does not feed into the global algorithm.
-
@ariadne@social.treehouse.systems a number of questions, but here's one: why are DMs in Loops using unencrypted Notes (like Mastodon, NodeBB, etc.)?
Dan says he's been working on supporting E2EE (with alignment from @benpate@mastodon.social), asking for funding to get the work across the finish line.
Was also asked why 720p, and when that can be improved. Dan indicates in the positive.
-
I asked @dansup@mastodon.social what the Sovereign Tech Agency standards involvement looks like. I asked because I had no idea what that was and his announcement seemed completely out of the blue.
Mainly I wanted to know how it fit in with existing standards work in AP, which was generally: FEPS, Task Forces, SWICG, and SWWG.
He says that generally the STF is helping fund his work to create FEPs and participate in task forces and working groups, and additionally participation in a week-long conference in Dublin <img class="not-responsive emoji" src="https://activitypub.space/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/1f1ee-1f1ea.png?v=8161d5c9b56" title="

@evan@cosocial.ca a really cool entry point into the fediverse — in my opinion — are hyper-local organizations like universities, libraries, etc.
I would absolutely jump on the opportunity for a university to set up a forum for their student body. Every incoming student gets a handle, and they get access to a semi-private online third space for assignments, campus activities, and everything in between.
