@mausmalone also, the way this button is being presented feels like we are enabling a sparkly new thing? Kind of the opposite of what it is doing

@raymaccarthy @firefoxwebdevs Apologies, I am not trying to be disingenuous. There was a survey recently from the Mozilla Foundation that was looking at their future work. Many people seem to think it was tied to Firefox.
-
@raymaccarthy @firefoxwebdevs It would need to cater for not only Windows and macOS (possibly multiple versions of both) as well as quite a few different Linux desktops. At the same time, it would need to have light and dark modes for all.
With Fx having the same broad style across most platforms feels much better to support and easier for contributors to work on.
-
@Ostrobothnia @firefoxwebdevs Thanks for the rec! I just installed it and will be test driving for a bit!
-
-
@firefoxwebdevs yay! \o/
-
@nuintari @firefoxwebdevs Any complains about AI being forced at everyone's rectum should be brought to the wef members.

What Mozilla did:
️What the users actually wanted:
️Duke of Germany 💫 (@duke_of_germany@mastodon.gamedev.place)
Let's ask the real question: Firefox users, do you want any AI directly built into Firefox, or separated out into extensions? @firefoxwebdevs@mastodon.social @davidgerard@circumstances.run @tante@tldr.nettime.org #Firefox #InformedConsent [ ] I want AI built into Firefox [ ] I want AI separated into extensions [ ] Mozilla should not focus on AI features at all
Gamedev Mastodon (mastodon.gamedev.place)
-
@wojtek @fabio @firefoxwebdevs then why do a survey?
-
@nuintari @firefoxwebdevs Don’t write "we“ where you should have written "I“. I find many AI features useful.
-
@mike @firefoxwebdevs
>Because I've literally only heard the former
Sounds like a group issue. AI, or as I like to call it data generators, are themselves neutral like any tool, what people should be concerned about them is if the license of the software is copyleft and if the data trained on is not violating basic morals, that last part being extremely hard to know except if your directly source your data to the public, like for example most copyleft creative commons data. -
@alahmnat @mike @firefoxwebdevs SEO optimized shit came long before AI and has nothing to do with it. This myth that the web was a healthy place before LLMs came is annoying.
-
@firefoxwebdevs Thank you!
-
@Mastokarl No, the web wasn't in great shape before 2022, but LLMs have made the problem a billion times worse.
-
@Mastokarl @alahmnat @firefoxwebdevs I don't think anyone has illusions that the web was free of bullshit before LLMs.
But LLMs have made it vastly vastly easier to generate bullshit, and as an absolutely inevitable result, LLM-generated bullshit is now drowning out everything else.
This seems pretty uncontroversial to me.
-
@GuillaumeRossolini @firefoxwebdevs Yeah ... it's a very strange user experience to turn on turning off AI.
I still really think the Standard/Strict/Custom Privacy UI design is a good template.

-
@mike @firefoxwebdevs i want ai, that only runs locally
-
@firefoxwebdevs I'll be switching remaining friends and family members over to Librewolf and/or Vivaldi before this update drops
AI in the browser is a disaster waiting to happen and it's sad to see Mozilla think so little of its users opinions
-
@firefoxwebdevs The damage is done. I am not coming back. You're wasting money and effort on useless shit instead of making Firefox better for my purposes. So I'd rather support a fork that removes all that AI code the hard way. I don't trust your "controls" to do anything at all.
